A fan who can see a bit of light!
October 1st, 2008Here’s a fan with some good thinking.
JohnFromFenham, Well done!
I was thinking about what it would take to turn Newcastle United into a team that consistently challenges for the title. I originally wrote down a 5 year plan, but now I can see that it would take a lot longer. 5 years is very optimistc and based on making huge improvements each season.
Working backwards, here is an optimistic time frame to establishing Newcastle as a great team. My assessment is based on the observation that success has to be gradual, over several seasons. I am assuming that we don’t get taken over by an Abromovich or Arab-style money man.
Season 1: (2008-9)We get bought out late this year, bring in a new manager and manage to safely fend off the threat of relegation by spring. The new owners are financially stable and prepared to invest in the squad.
Season 2: We are hard team to beat at home and can hold our own away. We aren’t good enough to beat too many of the teams above us, but we fight hard and give it a good shot.
Season 3: We finish comfortably upper mid-table, between seventh and fifth. We win most of our home games against the teams around us, and win against the lower teams away. Investment starts in to turn the acadmey into a breeding of ground of the world’s best up and coming players.
Season 4: We qualify or almost qualify for the champions league, and are signing some of the best young players. Compare with Liverpool.
Season 5: We qualify for the Champions league and are able to attract some of Europe’s biggest names in the peak of their careers. Continue investing in youth development. Compare with Man U and Chelsea.
Season 6: Newcastle United are serious title contenders, and the youth team is peppered with some of the best footballing talent from the UK and abroad. We are able to compete financially with any team in Europe. Compare with Man U and Chelsea.
